Mixed Doubles

False Helen had always tried to feel true and in any case she was here now. A faraway paradise. Could this really be her life? While she perhaps didn't think of herself as false, exactly, she couldn't in all honesty deny that she might be an ersatz version of someone else, someone she perhaps should have been.

As she crinkled her forehead in consternation, her concentration was shattered by the dramatic entrance of Julian, fresh from landing 24,000 modern rifles at Larne.

His very savoir-faire made her realize that she wasn't having ideas, rather ideas were having her.

"Erm," she began, "you can eat the vegetables, if they're --"

"Silence!" shouted Julian, and immediately set off to enact a ploy to force the Bosnian hand.

As for Helen she knew she had to regroup somehow as usual. She saw her expectations upended and felt undeniably ecstatic. Suddenly the door flew open and he was back.

"I'm back!" he declared gloriously. "I've accomplished my mission and used political agents to stir up unrest in the Transvaal besides."

Helen threw herself at him, allowing Julian to take swift and sure command of the situation.

"I've seen realer I'll warrant," he averred. "I'll have you here and now!"

With sudden swiftness their embrace augured unabashed intimacy and the other side of the world felt very far away indeed.
